Portfolio Submission Details

Your portfolio must include:

12-15 images of recent artworks done in any medium. Each image must contain the work’s title, year completed, medium and size (ex. Self Portrait, 2018, Oil on Canvas, 11”x14”). You have the option to include videos in your portfolio. Videos can be a compilation of various works, but the total runtime cannot exceed five minutes.

For first-year applicants, a one-page “Statement of Purpose” describing:

• Your reasons for applying to an interdisciplinary studio art program.
• Your personal and/or academic background in art.
• The influences, experiences, common themes, and interests that have impacted your art practice.

For transfer applicants, a one-page “Transfer Statement” describing:

• Your reasons for applying to transfer to the NYU BFA in Studio Art.
• The influences, experiences, common themes, and interests that have impacted your art practice.

Summary of previous and/or current course work taken in art including all college-level studio art, art history, and/or art theory classes. List in the following format: class title, semester taken, grade received/in progress.

• We are looking for the next generation of storytellers. Choose one of the following opening lines and tell us a story using it as the first line. Be sure to build dramatic tension and include a resolution. We do not want an excerpt from a longer story.
• Opening Lines:
  Didn’t you ask for scrambled eggs?
  Don’t lie to me.
  Is it just me, or is it getting crazier out there?
  Things are never gonna be the same now.
• Format: Up to 4 typed, double-spaced 8.5” x 11″ pages, written in prose format. This should be a short story, not a screenplay.

Part 3. Tell a story about yourself

• Provide a 1-2 minute creative self-portrait where you show and tell us about yourself and what’s important to you.
• We encourage you to share information that we cannot get from other aspects of your portfolio submission. Your video should be in your own voice, in your own format, and not a reiteration of why you want to be admitted to NYU’s film program.
• We will not be judging the production value of this film; we encourage applicants to use what is readily available to them (i.e. cellphones or computers).

Part 4. Writing response

Respond to this prompt:

• You have chosen to spend a year alone on a very special deserted island. The island is equipped with housing, food, water, electricity, internet, a computer, a cell phone, writing/drawing materials, and a DVD player.
• Pick five non-essential items, including one book, one film/tv show, and three other (non-essential) items to bring with you to enrich your stay. What would these items be and why/how will they help make this time alone meaningful? This is not a survivalist question, nor are you trying to escape the island. Items must fit in a standard carry-on size suitcase.
• Your essay should be no more than 1 page in length. You can list your items and provide thoughtful descriptions for each or write your essay in prose format.

Part 5. Portfolio （Choose ONLY ONE）

• Option 1: Artistic Portfolio (10-15 images):
  1. A portfolio of 10-15 photographs, drawings, paintings, sculpture or set design work; please do not include films if you are submitting an artistic portfolio.
  2. Your submission should reflect clearly developed ideas and themes and convey a clear and imaginative visual sense.
  3. You may upload up to fifteen photographic or scanned images of your work.
  4. If you would like to include an animatic as one of your “still” images, you may do so but it should be 20 seconds or shorter.
  5. Still images and scans should be a minimum of 72 dpi.
• Option 2: Film or video (up to five minutes total running time):
  1. Your submission should be a complete work of up to five minutes which represents your best effort and one which engages your audience.
  2. Video footage of staged plays or theater performances is not acceptable. You must be the principal creative force of the piece (i.e. the director, writer, editor, or cinematographer).
  3. We strongly discourage you from submitting co-directed or co-written projects, however if you choose to submit a co-created work, you must clearly state your specific contribution to the project.
  4. We do not accept excerpts or reels. Your project should be a single complete work.
  5. Be sure to test your video prior to submission. If you are submitting a link, please be sure no downloads or passwords are required.
• Option 3: Writing (up to six pages):
  1. Your submission should be up to six pages of creative writing consisting of either a complete short story, complete film script, or complete stage play.
  2. Do not submit excerpts.
  3. FORMAT: Double spaced, prose or screenplay format where applicable. (Save as a PDF.)
• For all Creative Submissions, the exact credits must be specified. Please send the requested items only; no substitutions, variations, or extraneous materials. Failure to comply with these guidelines will be grounds for automatic disqualification.

Short Essay Questions.

Respond to all of the following questions.

• Why do you want to come to the Game Center? What excites you most about game design?
• We want you to write about a game that is NOT a computer or video game (a board game, a sport, etc) that you like to play. What do you like about it? What about the game makes it enjoyable to play?
• Videogame designers usually work in teams. What is it about you that makes you a good team member?
• Tell us about a game you know well. What is something that an average player might not know or understand about it?
• What are your hopes for the future of games?

Creative Project. 

• If a project is a digital game or software application: Detailed instructions for installation and interaction, including platform requirements, must be included. You will not be able to upload any game files, so please provide a link to your online game or downloadable game files, and include the link in your design statement.
• If a project is a board game, performance, game event, or other physical project: Include detailed documentation of the project, such as photographs, a short video, script, rules of play, etc.
• If a project is a visual artwork or series: Include detailed visual documentation of the project (3 – 5 images and/or up to 5 minutes of video).
• If a project is a video: You may upload the video directly to Slideroom or as well as a link to the video itself.  Be sure that the link does not require a special login.
• If a project is a written paper or essay: Please upload the paper itself in PDF format. Include at the start an abstract or summary of the essay.
• If a project is a website or other online-accessible project: A link to the online project is sufficient.
• If your project does not fit into any of these categories and you do not know how best to submit or document the project, contact the Game Center at [email protected] directly for advice.

SUBMIT 15-20 IMAGES

At least 10 images should be on a single theme. Title or caption each of your images. Include a brief description with the medium/format (analog, digital, etc.) and indicate which 10 images are within the single theme. You will be asked to explain your chosen series in your written statement.

We also accept submission of new and interactive media based work, sound and video art. If appropriate, include link in the caption. You may include up to 5 non-photo based images (painting, sculpture, collage, installation, drawing, etc.), but if you choose to do so, you must submit a total of 20 images.

1. VISUAL SUBMISSION

Choose ONE of the following formats (i.e., do not combine video and photography):

Video: The submission should contain one complete narrative or documentary film with a total running time that does not exceed 15 minutes. Video footage of staged plays or theatre performances is not acceptable.

Photography (Stills): No more than 10 prints on any subject, black and white or color, with or without commentary may be submitted. The photographs may also be a presentation of work in other media, such as painting, illustration, sculpture, set design, costume design, etc.

2. WRITTEN SUBMISSIONS

You must submit ALL of the following:

Dramatic Story:The Dramatic story is a required short narrative writing exercise. Write a two page story which builds dramatic tension and ends with one of these lines:

“So I took the pair of sneakers, and never looked back.”

“I think Mom is psychic.”

“Any questions?”

“And for the first time ever, I put on a mask.”

“Life isn’t meant to be fair.”

“I still don’t trust you, but OK.”

“Now I see it!”

“We bumped elbows and split.”

Format for the Dramatic Story: 2 pages, double-spaced. (Save as a pdf and upload to tischfilmandtv.slideroom.com.)

Dialogue Scene: Write an interesting conversation between two people that reveals something about the characters. You can give a one sentence description of each character, but please include only essential details. Do not write back story. Write a maximum of two pages in screenwriting format.

Concept:
Describe one concept for a feature-length script, narrative film, or documentary that you would like to develop. Write no more than one page, typed, double-spaced.
