PORTFOLIO: Applicants should submit 12-15 pieces of their strongest and most current work.

Identify all work with project name, size, medium and concept. If work was created as a team project, the applicant should describe their specific role in the process. Quality and professional presentation are critical. The portfolio may include:

• Applicant’s design and concept development process
• Typography
• Page layout
• Advertising and Digital Design, Graphic Design, Packaging Design, Visual Presentation, and Exhibition Design
• Three-dimensional design
• Motion, interactive and/or other screen-based work
• Work that represents current strengths

Essays

1. In 200 words or less, please tell us what specifically attracts you to this major.
2. In 300 words or less, please describe a situation when your creative vision differed from a teacher or employer during an evaluation of your work. How did you handle the situation?

PORTFOLIO: Your portfolio must include 10-15 pieces.

Work submitted need not relate specifically to communication design, but should demonstrate one or all the following:

• Drawing ability – we recommend having two drawings by hand using pencil, charcoal, pen, or ink of people or objects from nature including still life, portraits, landscapes, or cityscapes. When creating your original artwork, we recommend that you draw from observation and do not copy photos of famous personalities or comic book characters.
• Conceptual development – we recommend two to four pages from your sketchbook.
• Ideas and drawings do not need to be fully formed. Your sketches should indicate your creative process for any piece of your original work.
• Sense of color, design, and composition
• Digital design ability – We recommend one or two pieces created digitally. The pieces may be animation or interactive work. You may upload a screen shot of the main screen or image and/or provide a URL for the live piece in the written description. Your animation or interactive work must be on a public website, with no password. You cannot upload animation or interactive work to this portfolio.
• Ability to work in a variety of media
• Evidence of interest in art or design – Any work that shows experience solving communication design or typographic problems is welcomed, but not required.

Transfer students 

Transfer students should submit at least six (6) pieces of original artwork that represent design projects completed at your previous school. Please label each piece with a project name and the course name/number in which the project was created. Provide a short explanation of the project and concept.

Provide 10-15 items. Images (up to 5MB each), video (up to 250MB each), PDFs (up to 10MB each).

Essay

In 250 words or less, provide an example of when your point of view differed from a teacher or employer during an evaluation of your performance. How did you handle the situation?

PORTFOLIO – 3 projects

Project One: 

Sportswear Coordinates (formerly Mix-and-Match Designs) (3-6 images)

Create a mood/inspiration page for the following sportswear designs. The mood page should be an image that has inspired you to create the designs below. Include a short-written explanation of how the designs have been inspired by the mood page image and list the destination and season of the year when your designs will be worn.

Draw original garment designs in color using the medium of your choice. Show sportswear separates that work together. Imagine that you are designing a wardrobe of 4 pieces that worn together in various combinations could be worn for different situations.

• Design a jacket
• Design a top (use the top twice, once on each figure)
• Design a pant
• Design a skirt

Sketch your designs in color on two hand drawn figures. Do not trace or use a template for your figures. Include back views of the garments on an additional figure or as a flat sketch. For portfolio submission, scan or photograph real fabric swatches (not “digital”) and identify those fabrics (fabric weave/knit and fiber; for example, wool gabardine, silk charmeuse, cotton gauze, etc.) on the front of the sketches. (If you are currently unable to obtain real fabric swatches due to Covid-19 restrictions, you may use “digital” swatches. Be sure to identify the fabrics
[fabric weave/knit and fiber].) Submit 3 to 6 images for this project.

Project Two:

Fashion Design Artwork (4-8 images)

Submit four to eight sketches of your original fashion design artwork on figures that you have drawn yourself. Express your creativity, style, and variety. Do not include fine art samples; only fashion design artwork should be submitted. Edit your portfolio. Do not submit more than is requested.

Draw original designs in color. Use the medium of your choice. Note: original artwork can be computer generated, but not required. Design sketches are to be on full-length fashion figures with back views.

Include scanned or digital photo of actual 2” x 2” fabric swatches on the front of each sketch. Identify the type of fabric (e.g. 100% wool gabardine).

Write 2 sentences for each image to explain inspiration or your thought process.

Project Three:

Sewing Project (4-9 Photographs)

Submit photographs of two or three garments you have sewn (include front and back views). Samples are to demonstrate knowledge of construction. Originality, creativity, and design aesthetic are valued. Photograph the clothing on a person or dress mannequin. Garments can be created from commercial patterns or you can develop your own patterns or drape the design. Garment examples must be sewn. Do not show existing garments that have just been decorated.

Take photographs of the front and back of each garment, a third photograph may be taken to showcase special details on a garment. Submit up to nine photographs for this project.

Provide 11-23 items. Images (up to 5MB each) and PDFs (up to 10MB each)

Essay

Please respond thoughtfully and note that your answer does not replace the essay that you are required to submit as part of your FIT/SUNY application.

1. In a maximum of 200 words, please tell us about your career goals upon completion of your BFA degree in Fabric Styling.

PORTFOLIO: Your portfolio must include 10-14 images.

Fabric Styling applicants must submit images of two presentation boards. Submit one apparel board and one home furnishings board, OR submit two boards from one of these areas.

• Boards should be executed on black illustration board or black foam core board.
• Select a season and a theme for each board.
• Each board should have at least six (6) patterned fabric swatches and at least six (6) more solid color swatches. (12 swatches minimum)
• The solid color swatches can be paint chip samples from any paint store.
• Boards should have photos, pictures from magazines, or your own art work or digital images illustrating the theme.

Submit one image showing a complete view of each board. Submit 4 to 6 images showing close-up views of each board.Provide 10-14 items. Images (up to 5MB each) and PDFs (up to 10MB each)

Please be advised that SlideRoom allows a MAXIMUM of 5 files per portfolio submission. Each of these files may be a PDF (up to 10MB) or a video (up to 250MB). This may be accomplished by creating and submitting multi-page PDFs.

Essay (500 words or less)

In 500 words or less, explain Why jewelry? What area of the jewelry industry interests you the most? Describe three contemporary jewelry designers or jewelry design “houses” you admire. Your choices may include fine or fashion jewelry. 

PORTFOLIO

Original Artwork (10-15 finished pieces)

Your portfolio must contain 10 to 15 finished pieces. 5 to 7 of your finished pieces must include observational drawings (that is, drawings from real life. For example, still life, portrait, landscape, and figure, design drawing, perspective drawings from life and refined product drawings. No drawings from photos). An additional 3 to 5 of your finished pieces must include jewelry pieces drawn to scale (1” = 1”). You may include drawings of a necklace, earing or brooch. Please limit the number of pieces made with beading and wire wrapping to no more than 2.

The other finished pieces are open to your individual passions and personality. This might be a refined body with a cohesive concept of work, best of your private work, or a collection of your favorite experiments. You may include paintings, prints, photos, graphics, ceramics, furniture, models, jewelry, character/concept art, illustration, animation or web design – whatever you like and are good at doing.
